Surprisingly, I didn’t really enjoy crafting until I became a parent and started blogging. Having kids pushed me to be more creative. I used to think crafts were time-consuming and required more effort than I was willing to give. Ironically, my mom—who is very crafty—always encouraged me to try, but I wasn’t interested. As an adult, I’ve grown to love making things by hand and giving homemade gifts. You can find many of my DIY projects in my archives. These days you’ll often find me creating decor for my girls’ rooms or a handmade gift for someone special. My latest project is: DIY Yarn Covered Letters For Mother’s Day.

While a bouquet or a piece of jewelry is lovely, the handmade gifts from my kids are the ones I cherish most. This year I wanted to create something with that same heartfelt touch for Mother’s Day. Knowing how much my mom enjoys arts and crafts, I knew she would appreciate a thoughtful handmade gift. While gathering supplies for these yarn-covered letters, I stopped by Walmart and picked up some pretty tissue paper and a greeting card to include in the display. I especially liked a humorous card I found that’s perfect for a new mom—cards are a simple way to add personality to any gift.

I chose a shadow box to display the yarn-covered letters so my mom can add little keepsakes or switch out the letters later. She could also frame the greeting card if she prefers. Below are the simple steps to make these Mother’s Day yarn letters.

What you’ll need:

  • Shadow box (I used a 5×7)
  • 1.75 in wooden letters
  • Glue
  • Tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • Yarn

How to:

Begin by securing the yarn to the edge of the wooden letter and start wrapping it around. Wrapping the yarn gives a more even, finished look than gluing individual strands. For a thicker appearance, wrap the letter twice with yarn.

When the letter is fully wrapped, trim the yarn and glue the end down to secure it. Next, cover the back of the shadow box with tissue paper for a pretty background—treat it like wrapping a gift so the paper looks neat inside the frame.

Position the letters on the tissue-papered background and glue them in place. You can keep the display simple with only the letters, or embellish it with small faux flowers, a photo of the kids, or for an expecting mom, a sonogram picture. Aside from wrapping the edges, this craft is simple enough to make with children.
