After nearly 50 hours of travel, our 20 days under the Greek sun were absolutely worth it. My phone is full of photos—scenes, food and cats—but here is a concise photo journal capturing the highlights of an unforgettable trip.
We started with five days in Athens, eager to soak up the city’s atmosphere and its historic treasures. With a focus on archaeology and local cuisine, we explored iconic sites and even took a day trip south along the Athens Riviera to Cape Sounion.
From Athens we headed into the Peloponnese for four days of countryside and archaeology. We crossed the striking Corinth Canal, visited Epidaurus, passed through Nafplia and the plain of Argos, and explored the ruins of Mycenae. Driving through Tripolis and Megalopolis brought us to Olympia for an overnight stay. From there we continued to Patras, crossed the Rio-Antirio Bridge and spent the night in the coastal town of Itea. The route then climbed to the mountain town of Arachova and on to Delphi, before heading north through villages and towns to Kalambaka for the night. After visiting the monasteries of Meteora we returned south to Athens via Trikala, Lamia, Thermopylae and Kammena Vourla.
Needing rest after many days on the road, we took a ferry to Mykonos for relaxation. While based on Mykonos we took a short ferry ride to Delos, the mythic birthplace of Apollo and an important ancient religious center. After three nights in Mykonos we moved on to Santorini. There we boarded a catamaran to view the island from the sea—visiting beaches and enjoying lunch on the water—before returning to port. Following three nights on Santorini, we flew back to Athens for one final night before our long journey home.
Greece is a destination everyone should experience at least once. Athens felt like a second home, and I’d gladly return. For a survival guide and more on Greek food, watch for upcoming posts.
