With Valentine’s Day approaching, many couples will look for a relaxed, intimate dinner. Instead of navigating a crowded restaurant, make memories by cooking together at home—where conversation is easy and the rhythm of the kitchen becomes part of the evening.

This recipe is part of a Date Night at Home collection created to inspire simple, delicious menus for two. Steamed clams with pan-roasted tomatoes make a flavorful starter that feels special without being complicated. Seafood often reads as celebratory, and clams deliver big taste with minimal fuss.

Steamed clams pair beautifully with rich pasta dishes or a lighter, citrusy main. For a fuller meal, serve alongside a shrimp dish or a crisp salad and plenty of crusty bread to soak up the cooking juices.

Grape tomatoes are gently cooked in the pan before adding clams, which brings natural sweetness and a touch of acidity to the broth. Littleneck clams are used here because they’re small and tender, letting you enjoy more of them, but the steaming method works for many clam varieties—just adjust the liquid if using larger shells.

If you’ve never worked with live clams, follow the simple prep steps below. Clams are living shellfish, and handling them correctly preserves flavor and safety. These tips are everything you need to confidently clean and cook clams at home.

Caring for clams before cooking is essential because they are still alive when purchased. Many seafood counters will offer to keep them on ice until you leave; when transporting or storing at home, keep that in mind.

You may buy clams either loose from the counter or in a mesh bag. Counter-sold clams are typically selected and packed carefully, while mesh bags can include a few damaged shells from transit—inspect carefully and discard any broken pieces.

How to clean clams before cooking:

  • Refrigerate live clams for 24–48 hours. Store them uncovered in a breathable container or mesh bag with damp paper towels or ice nearby. Do not fully submerge them in water while storing; they need air to stay alive.
  • Rinse and purge grit before cooking. To remove sand, submerge clams in cold water for 20–30 minutes so they can filter out grit. Replace the water if you need them to purge longer. When finished, take clams out by hand and rinse each one under running water; avoid dumping them into a colander that returns sandy water to the shells.
  • Discard damaged or unresponsive clams. Throw away any with cracked shells. If a clam is open, tap it—if it doesn’t close, it is likely dead and should be discarded for safety.

When you’re ready to cook, white wine is used as the steaming liquid to add brightness and deepen the clam broth. For a non-alcoholic alternative, use vegetable or chicken broth. Steam the clams briefly so they open and remain tender—overcooking makes them tough. Serve immediately with chopped parsley and warm, crusty bread for dipping.
