Once, stuck in a tiny porta-potty with two sweaty, cranky children, I frantically reached for the hand sanitizer dispenser—only to find it empty. There was no nearby sink. After a frantic search of my diaper bag, I found a small bottle of homemade hand sanitizer I’d made months earlier. It was a lifesaver.

I don’t always use hand sanitizer, but when I do, it’s in porta-potties.
Homemade hand sanitizer doesn’t replace hand washing…but it’s better than nothing
Washing with soap and water is the best way to remove germs whenever a sink is available. But when hand-washing isn’t practical—camping, crowded restrooms, or after a close contact with a sick child—a good hand sanitizer is a helpful alternative.
We can’t prevent every illness, but sensible precautions help reduce the frequency of infections.
Problems with some commercial hand sanitizers
Commercial hand sanitizers are convenient, but they can present concerns:
1. Survival of resistant bacteria
Many sanitizers advertise killing 99.9% of bacteria. The small fraction that survives can include hardier strains. Repeated exposure to low-level antimicrobial agents may contribute to resistant organisms.
2. Artificial fragrances
Synthetic fragrances are common in personal care products. Some people are sensitive to these chemicals, and research links certain synthetic fragrance compounds to health concerns. For those who prefer to avoid artificial scents, fragrance-free or naturally scented options are better choices.
3. Skin irritation
Alcohol-heavy sanitizers can dry the skin, causing cracking and irritation, especially in children. Formulations that include moisturizers help maintain skin barrier health while still reducing germs.

A homemade sanitizer that’s tough on germs and gentle on skin
My preferred hand sanitizer is homemade. It combines disinfecting alcohol with aloe vera for moisture and a few drops of essential oil for scent and antimicrobial support. It’s effective, simple, and kinder to hands than many commercial products.
The recipe uses aloe vera gel as a moisturizer, vodka or rubbing alcohol for disinfection, and antibacterial essential oils. That’s it—no complicated steps or special equipment.

How to make hand sanitizer in under one minute
This mixture is quick: add three ingredients to a small bottle and shake. No measuring cups, no extra dishes, no heating required.
The three ingredients you need:
- ¼ cup aloe vera gel (use a shelf-stable product)
- 1 tablespoon alcohol (vodka or rubbing alcohol)
- About 20 drops of antibacterial essential oils of your choice
Recommended essential oils:
- Lemon
- Lavender
- Peppermint
- Blends such as Thieves or other antibacterial combinations
If using essential oils, check safety guidance for children and pets. Some oils are not recommended for young children or animals.

Please research each essential oil for appropriate use; some are not safe for children or pets.

Simple directions:
- Squeeze aloe vera gel into a 3–4 oz squeeze or spray bottle.
- Add the alcohol and then drop in the essential oils.
- Screw the cap on tightly and shake to mix.
Notes: Fresh, unpreserved aloe vera may not store well. Use a shelf-stable aloe vera product for longer shelf life. Shake well before each use.

Bonus: Extra-potent antiviral hand sanitizer recipe
For stronger antiviral activity, health guidance recommends formulations with at least 60% alcohol. This version is more liquid and works best in a spray bottle.
Antiviral spray ingredients:
- ¼ cup rubbing alcohol
- 1½ tablespoons aloe vera gel
- About 20 drops essential oils of choice
Directions:
- Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle.
- Shake well and spray as needed.
Keep a small bottle in your bag so you’re prepared whenever a sink or dispenser isn’t available.

Resources: CDC recommendations support using hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol for antiviral protection. Always evaluate ingredient safety, especially around children and pets.
