Squirrel-Shaped Avocado Snacks for Fun Party Bites

If you want to delight your kids, try these charming squirrel-shaped avocado snacks—made using the whole avocado, including the pit. Add candy eyes and little cheddar teeth for an extra cute touch. They’re perfect with a sprinkle of sea salt or served alongside morning eggs.

Two avocado halves are decorated with avocado pieces to resemble squirrels, using the pits to resemble nuts with added shapes for eyes, ears, tails, arms, and teeth.

How to Make Squirrel Shaped Avocado Snacks

  1. Halve the avocado and slice a small piece off the bottom of each half so they sit flat. Save the trimmed pieces for the squirrel details.
  2. Shape ears, tail, snout, nose, arms and legs using small cookie cutters (oval and petal shapes work well).
  3. Assemble the elements on each avocado half. Use toothpicks to attach ears while arranging, removing them before serving.
  4. Finish with small cheddar rectangles for teeth and candy eyes for a playful face.
  5. Add the pit—remove the lower half of the pit’s peel and place the pit in the center to look like a nut.

Recipe Tip

To prevent browning, lightly drizzle the avocado with lemon or lime juice before assembling.

Equipment

  • small oval cookie cutter
  • small petal cookie cutter

Ingredients

  • 1 avocado
  • white cheddar, small piece
  • 4 candy eyes

Instructions

  • Cut the avocado in half and remove the pit. Keep the pit whole for the “nut” detail.
  • Trim a thin slice from the bottom of both halves so they sit flat. Reserve the trimmed pieces for hands, feet, ears, mouth, nose and tail.
  • Use the oval cutter to shape hands and feet from the reserved pieces.
  • Cut small triangles for ears and secure them temporarily with toothpicks while you arrange the squirrels. Remove toothpicks before serving.
  • Shape the mouth and use the petal cutter to form a small nose.
  • If you don’t have enough avocado for a large tail, make a smaller tail or use the peel from an extra avocado for contrast.
  • Peel the bottom half of the avocado pit so it looks like a small nut and place it in the center of the avocado half.
  • Cut four small rectangles from the cheddar to create teeth and press them into the mouth area.
  • Add candy eyes and arrange all pieces to complete the squirrel faces. Serve immediately or refrigerate briefly until ready to eat.
